Shoestring are delighted to present a fiftieth anniversary production of The Birthday Party, Harold Pinter’s first full-length play. At first slammed by bewildered critics, on March 22nd 1960 the play was seen by 11 million viewers on ITV. It was an overnight success, introducing audiences to Pinter’s trademark enigmatic menace, juxtaposing terror and hilarity. It has since been revived to great acclaim all over the world. In a run-down seaside boarding-house, the absent-minded landlady, Meg, produces endless brews of stewed tea and thinks fried bread is haute cuisine. Stanley Webber is the only lodger. It’s his birthday. When two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, arrive, the party begins to get scary and out of control... |
