Tues 3 - Sat 7 Dec, Stamford Theatre theatre
A production by our resident amateur theatre company
by Jessica Swale
Girton College, Cambridge was the first college in England to admit women but they were not allowed to graduate. They leave university stigmatised as ‘blue stockings’ – without qualifications and unmarriageable. It is 1896 and Jessica Swale’s lively and amusing play tells the story of Tess Moffat and a group of ‘first-years’ determined to win the right to graduate.
Their story is followed over one tumultuous year as they encounter the many hurdles in their way - the class divide, misogyny, and the university opposition – not forgetting the distractions of love. Finally the whole issue is put to the vote…
