Fri 24 May, The Deepings School deepings literary festival
Deepings Literary Festival 2019
Venue: The Deepings School
Gerald Dickens, a great-great-grandson of literary giant Charles Dickens, will present his sensational one-man performance of Mr Dickens is Coming! as part of a fabulous evening of words and music—Dickens in the Deepings! at The Deepings School.
Mr Dickens is Coming! is a light-hearted and varied look at the life and character of Charles Dickens incorporating scenes from the great author’s works, diary extracts and observations from those who knew and worked with one of the world’s best known novelists.
Gerald regularly performs in major theatres and arts centres and has appeared at arts and literary festivals across the UK receiving enormous praise from press and public alike; “Dickens the actor gets full value from Dickens the writer…A gifted storyteller…”
He will be joined for the evening by talented musicians and songwriters The Bookshop Band. Formed in September 2010 and releasing their first album in December that year, they have since released 13 albums each exploring their responses to over 100 author’s books. They have toured extensively around the UK and abroad, from bookshops to festival main-stages, and have been commissioned by BBC Radio 3, The V&A Museum, The National Portrait Gallery and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, most recently writing two songs for the launch of Philip Pullman’s The Book Of Dust. They will be bringing a new especially commissioned piece with a Dickensian theme to The Deepings as part of the evening’s entertainment.
Between them Beth Porter and Ben Please bring the books to the stage along with a multitude of instruments, including cello, harmonium, glockenspiel, guitars and ukuleles which, along with their distinct voices, create a cinematic sound that draws the audience right in to a highly intimate performance, at once touching and mesmerizing, heart wrenching and funny.
