Jazz In The Cellar Bar
The BJMQ have been playing together for almost a decade and during that time have built an almost telepathic level of communication when improvising. The band take all the major influences in jazz from Trad to Be-Bop, Swing and Free Jazz, Bossa Nova, Hard Bop, Funk and Electronica and meld them into their own special brew, rooted in swing and the blues. They have performed with Kenny Wheeler, Andy Sheppard, Tony Kofi, Jim Mullen, Nigel Price & Tina May as well as pop stars like Lady Gaga & Paul McCartney. Ben is a "saxophonist of soul and lyricism" according to John Fordham, the Guardian’s jazz critic, and the rest of the band are exciting voices on the national jazz scene. But it’s when they play together that something special happens.
Ben Martin - saxophones
Matthew Ratcliffle - Piano
Martyn Spencer - Double Bass
Andrew 'Woody' Wood - Drums
"Infectious intense fun, a thrilling evening of quality jazz"
"Great to hear a band not afraid to take chances on the bandstand and with the choice of tunes. Never thought I’d hear Billy Rae Cyrus reimagined in a New Orleans style!"
