BREATHLESS 12A

Jean-Luc Godard’s glorious Breathless, a landmark film of the French New Wave (‘Nouvelle Vague’).

Dir: Jean-Luc Godard | France | 1959 | 90 mins | Subtitled

Cast | Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Henri-Jacques Huet, Liliane Dreyfus

Jean-Paul Belmondo’s suave young criminal turns to Jean Seberg’s American student for help in Jean-Luc Godard’s glorious Breathless, a landmark film of the French New Wave (‘Nouvelle Vague’).

Michel (Belmondo) styles himself on Humphrey Bogart. After an attempted car theft takes a more serious turn, he heads to Paris, where he tries to persuade American journalism student Patricia (Seberg) to flee to Italy with him. A chaotic, exciting and anarchic romance, Godard’s debut challenged conventions of cinematic grammar and style and helped forge a revolution in film. Bursting with youthful energy, wit and invention, Breathless still feels as radically fresh today as it did on arrival.
