Dir: Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey | 2009 | France, Belgium, Ireland | 79 mins
Voice cast | Evan McGuire, Brendan Gleeson, Mick Lally
This dazzling Oscar-nominated animation – the first film in Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey’s celebrated Irish folklore trilogy – is set in medieval times.
It follows young Brendan, who lives in a remote outpost under siege from barbarian raids, and who finds a new life beckoning him when a master illuminator arrives carrying the magical and unfinished Book of Kells, brimming with ancient wisdom and power.
To help complete it, Brendan must overcome his deepest fears and begin a quest into the enchanted forest, where mythical creatures hide. Here, he meets Aisling, a mysterious fairy and wolf-girl, who helps him along his way. A sumptuous tale of friendship and creativity, with astonishingly beautiful animation.
