Nobel prize-winning novelist Kazuo Iishiguro has had the brilliant idea of adapting the 1952 Japanese classic film Ikiru (Living) by Akira Kurosawa into a thoroughly English version, also set in the 50's, starring Bill Nighy. Critics have universally praised both the remake and Nighy's performance as a moving and remarkable work that depicts the transformation of a stoney-faced local authority bureaucrat into a wise and generous man due to a medical diagnosis that radically changes his view of life.
"This is surely Nighy's signature role...Love Actually won our hearts but Living breaks them" The Sunday Times
