The first iron railway opened in 1825, a new way of travelling and transport. This had a momentous effect on Stamford, as it completely destroyed the coaching trade which had made the town wealthy and on which it had relied for well over 100 years.
Philippa details the town’s struggles to be involved in the new technology, as its former major industry collapsed in a few short years. She investigates the physical changes that the coming of the railways made to the town, and what effect this had on the town.
