Dir: Joachim Trier | Norway, France, Germany | 2025 | 133 mins | Partially subtitled
Cast | Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Elle Fanning, Anders Danielsen Lie
Following the global success of The Worst Person in the World, Oscar nominee Joachim Trier reunites with BAFTA nominee Renate Reinsve for this universally acclaimed follow-up. Norway’s entry for Best International Feature at the upcoming Oscars, Sentimental Value also won this year’s Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix.
Featuring career-best performances from Golden Globe winner Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, it stars Reinsve as Nora, a successful stage actress who, with her sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), reunites with their estranged father Gustav (Skarsgård) – a film director planning a comeback with a script based on their family. When Nora declines the lead, Gustav turns his attention to Rachel (Fanning), a Hollywood starlet seeking her breakthrough. With their fraught dynamics made even more complex, Nora, Agnes and Gustav are forced to confront the past.
Anchored by astonishing performances, Sentimental Value is a rich, graceful and profoundly moving film that intimately explores sisterhood, father-daughter relationships and the power of childhood memories. “A layered masterpiece that Trier has been working toward for his entire career” Indiewire
