Dir: Roger Michell | UK | 2020 | 95 mins
Cast: Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren, Anna Maxwell Martin, Matthew Goode, Fionn Whitehead
Jim Broadbent gives a brilliant performance in director Roger Michell’s (Notting Hill, Enduring Love) final film, The Duke, a delightful swan song and a true crime yarn worthy of an Ealing comedy.
1961: To his wife’s (Helen Mirren) chagrin, retiree Kempton Bunton (Broadbent) is waging a one-man war on BBC licence fee collectors that eventually lands him in prison. Not one to let a grudge lie, he launches a one man mission to abolish the licence fee for pensioners. The purchase of Goya’s ‘Portrait of the Duke of Wellington’ from the public coffers is the straw that breaks the camel’s back, setting him off on a stranger-than-fiction caper.
Richard Bean (National Theatre’s One Man, Two Guvnors) and Clive Coleman’s excellent script probes at the reasons for Kempton’s quixotic path, making The Duke an absorbing character study as well as a rousing, warmly old-fashioned shaggy dog tale.
“A glorious performance from Jim Broadbent” ★★★★★ The Observer
