The Thing set the benchmark for special makeup effects for years to come, with an extravagant parade of grisly, mutating creatures created by Rob Bottin. Underappreciated upon its initial release, The Thing is now justly celebrated for its chilling premise, bleak setting and foreboding atmosphere of dread and considered one of the 1980s’ very best horror films.
