Three Colours: Blue (15)

Three Colours: Blue (15)

Dir: Krzysztof Kieslowski France 1993 1hr 37mins Subtitled

With: Juliette Binoche, Benoît Régent

Based on the colours of the French flag and the principles of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity this trilogy of films from the 1990s by the great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski have returned to the big screen where they definitely belong. Blue stars Juliette Binoche, in arguable her greatest role, as a mother who loses both her husband and little girl in a car-crash and from the depths of her grief has to find a reason to live again. Her initial reaction is to withdraw from her relationships, lock herself in her apartment and suppress her pain. But avoiding human interactions on the bustling streets of Paris proves impossible, and she eventually meets up with an old friend who harbours a secret love for her, and who might just draw her back to reality.

“A penetrating, hypnotic meditation on liberty and loss” Washington Post
