Set in 17th century Italy this is the story of Benedetta who becomes a nun at an early age and gradually becomes overwhelmed by a series of religious and erotic visions which she eventually shares with another nun and the two become lovers. Yet the Mother Superior (Charlotte Rampling at her most vivid) has other ideas and with the plague coursing through Renaissance Italy Benedetta and her sensuous ways are soon in unholy conflict.
