Dir: Terence Davies UK 2022 2hrs 17mins
With: Jack Lowden, Peter Capaldi
This beautifully observed biopic of the English poet Siegfried Sassoon, who found fame during the First World War, is the latest film by the revered director Terence Davies. A complex man who survived the horrors of conflict Sassoon became a vocal critic of the war when he returned from service even though he won a medal for gallantry. In the 1920s he was adored by members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and stage world, and initially embraced a gay life-style before renouncing it all for a woman he fell in love with, embracing marriage and a more spiritual life. Jack Lowden plays Sassoon as the handsome younger poet while Peter Capaldi does a fine job representing the older man who looks back on his career searching for the meaning of it all.
