Stamford Arts Centre hasn't always been the cinema of choice in the town. Moving pictures first came to Stamford in the late 19th century, and now you can learn of their evolution within the town as local historian Philippa Massey charts the growth of ‘Animated Photographs’ in Stamford, and the popularity of this new medium.
In this documenatry film, available online for a limited time only, Philippa looks at the 6 buildings in Stamford which have shown films to the public over the years. She examines their fortunes - good and bad – and lists a tiny fraction of the films which have delighted Stamford audiences over the last 123 years.
Philippa will take the audience on a journey from the 1st showing of a film in the Assembly Rooms in 1897, to the heyday of 1920s – 40s cinema and beyond. At one point avid picture goers could choose from 4 different Stamford venues to see a film!
Cinema is at the heart of entertainment in Stamford, and now Stamford and Guildhall Arts Centre's are proud to present the opportunity to learn more of film exhibition within our beautiful town...
