Dir: Bob Fosse | USA | 1972 | 123 mins
Cast | Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Marisa Berenson, Fritz Wepper, Joel Grey
Bob Fosse’s sensational multi Oscar-winning film remains a showstopping triumph. The film that launched Liza Minnelli’s career, Cabaret is a dazzling study of hedonism and sexual ambiguity in pre-war Berlin and universally recognised as one of the best musicals of all time.
Based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel The Berlin Stories, it follows young American Sally Bowles (Minnelli) as she performs at the Kit Kat Klub in 1930s Berlin against the growing threat of fascism. A British arrival in the city, Brian Roberts (Michael York), moves into her boarding house, and as they form a friendship, they navigate the decadence, turmoil and nihilism of a city on the brink of war.
“An amazing experience” The Guardian
