1927: Don Lockwood has ascended from song-and-dance man to leading movie star. His on-screen partner, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) believes she and Don are in love. But with the arrival of the ‘talkies’, her squawky voice must be dubbed – and the girl chosen to be her voice is 'serious' actress Kathy Selden (Reynolds), for whom Don promptly falls.
