Dir: Ethan Coen | USA | 2023 | 84 mins
Cast | Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, Matt Damon
Ethan Coen’s solo directorial debut is a freewheeling comedy road movie with a killer cast.
Jamie (Margaret Qualley) is an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning a breakup with a girlfriend. Her pal Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) desperately needs to loosen up. In need of a fresh start, they embark on a road trip to Tallahassee, but things go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.
Co-written by Coen and Tricia Cooke, Drive-Away Dolls is a giddy, anarchic comedy performed by a terrific ensemble including Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon and Bill Camp. Bringing familiar Coen brothers tropes (an eclectic cast, notes of farce and absurdity, bursts of violence) together with a fresher, lighter tone, it was inspired by ‘70s exploitation romance films and may be the first in a ‘lesbian B-movie trilogy’.
