Set in a seaside picturehouse in the 1980s (actually the Dreamland cinema in Margate) this visually majestic film features Olivia Coleman as Hilary, the manager of the Empire, whose personal life is far from content until she takes under her wing a new, young, black worker and in fits and starts begins to see the light. But with racist intolerance on the rise beyond the lobby doors Hilary, and the cinema itself, are still challenged.
