A Tokyo commuter is caught in the purgatory of an endless subway tunnel in this inventive, claustrophobic psychological horror based on the popular 2023 video game The Exit 8 by Kotake Create. Directed by Genki Kawamura, producer of Your Name and The Colours Within, this unnerving, sparsely designed film is an immersive and entertaining exploration of personal choice, the traps of circular thinking and the impact of environments (and people) upon us.

In a sterile subway passageway, a nameless man (played by J-pop star Kazunari Ninomiya) sets out to find the exit. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover even a tiny new anomaly, turn back. If you don’t, carry on. Then leave via Exit 8. But even a single oversight sends him back to the start. Will he ever reach his goal and escape the infinite loop?
