Spring-boarding from the film Clemency, watch on-line first!
Louise Thomson, Chairperson of Stamford Anti-Racism Group, volunteered as a legal intern supporting lawyers working on Death Row. She and Ben Reynolds (Cinema Speak - Arts Centre, Stamford) discuss the film Clemency, exploring race and criminal justice in the context of the US death penalty, highlighting the main causes of miscarriages of justice in the US criminal justice system.
A little background on Louise Thomson:
I have always been interested in both criminal and social justice issues and have known from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in law. I'm currently a pupil barrister based in London. I studied Law at Newcastle University and was called to the Bar in 2019. In the time between finishing the Bar course and starting pupillage (barrister training contract) I completed a 4-month volunteer internship in Tuscon, Arizona with the Arizona Capital Representation Project (ACRP). My role was to support the lawyers who were working on death penalty appeal cases. The ACRP are against the death penalty in all cases so work not only on cases where the convicted person is claiming innocence but also work on cases where the convicted person has no innocence claims but is looking to get their sentence reduced from the death penalty to life imprisonment.
