Dir: David Hinton | UK | 2024 | 133 mins Documentary
The story of Martin Scorsese’s lifelong love affair with the films of Powell and Pressburger.
First encountering Powell and Pressburger films as a child in front of the family TV, Scorsese remembers that when their logo came on screen, "you knew you were in for fantasy, wonder, magic – real film magic."
In BAFTA-winner David Hinton’s wonderful, captivating doc, a must for cineastes, Scorsese explains his lasting love of films like The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes. Drawing on archive material, he explores the collaboration between the English Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger – two romantics and idealists, who crafted subversive, richly distinctive films that counter-intuitively thrived in the face of adversity during WWII – and their continuing influence on his own directorial style.
