Dir: Karim Aïnouz | Brazil, France, Germany | 2024 | 115 mins | Subtitled
Cast | Iago Xavier, Nataly Rocha, Fábio Assunção
Welcome to the neon-hued Motel Destino, a roadside sex hotel shimmering under Brazil’s burning blue skies. Run by hot-headed Elias (Fábio Assunção) and his restless younger wife Dayana (Nataly Rocha), its established order is disrupted when 21-year-old Heraldo (Iago Xavier), on the run after a botched hit, arrives. As a tropical noir scenario plays out, unspooling loyalties and desires intertwine to reveal that destiny has its own design.
A sensual dance of power, desire and liberation, Karim Aïnouz’s (The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão, Firebrand) acclaimed erotic thriller is brilliantly performed by its three leads against the glorious setting of Brazil’s Cearà region where Aïnouz himself grew up (and which he previously depicted on screen in 2014’s Futuro Beach).
