Tchaikovsky
Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50
À la mémoire d’un grand artiste
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, subtitled À la mémoire d’un grand artiste, stands among the great Romantic chamber works. Written in memory of Nikolai Rubinstein, the trio combines moments of grandeur with deeply personal expression, shaped by a powerful sense of loss. Its final movement unfolds as an extended set of variations, moving from intimate reflection to passages of almost symphonic breadth.
At the emotional heart of the festival’s final day, the work prepares the ground for the evening’s closing concert, opening out from private remembrance towards the expansive lyricism of Tchaikovsky’s later chamber writing in his sextet Souvenir de Florence.
