Based on the Stephen King bestseller, Stanley Kubrick’s (A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon) The Shining is infused with his own demons and obsessions, creating a maelstrom of dreamlike dread and disturbing ambiguity. 

 

Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) is the frustrated writer who takes an off-season job as a caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and their young son (Danny Lloyd). But as the chef (Scatman Crothers) ominously foretells, it’s a place full of memories, none of which are good. 

An endlessly analysed (and analysable) film full of images of surreal and subliminal power, The Shining hooks you in right from the opening tracking shot, as the family’s car winds its fateful way up a snowy mountain road…
