RETRO SCREENING: STAND BY ME 15

Four teenage friends go in search of a missing boy in Rob Reiner’s assured, nostalgic coming-of-age classic, back on screens for its 40th anniversary.

Dir: Rob Reiner | USA | 1986 | 89 mins

Cast | River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton, Jerry O'Connell, Kiefer Sutherland

Following the tragic loss of director Rob Reiner late last year, his 1986 coming-of-age masterpiece returns to screens for its 40th anniversary in a new digital 4K version. Based on a Stephen King novella, Stand By Me was Reiner’s own favourite amongst all his films. Nostalgic but never sentimental, richly emotional and rewarding, it’s a sensitive, original portrait of friendship and boyhood that features terrific performances from a young River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton, Jerry O'Connell and Kiefer Sutherland.

Summer, 1959: In a small rural Oregon town, a group of friends – sensitive Gordie (Wheaton), tough guy Chris (Phoenix), flamboyant Teddy (Feldman) and scaredy-cat Vern (O’Connell) – go in search of a missing teenager’s body. Wanting to be heroes in each other’s and their hometown’s eyes, they set out on an unforgettable two-day adventure which, though only a lark at first, evolves into a defining event in their lives.

“As fresh and moving as when it was first released. The classic of its genre”  Empire
