Dir: Peter Greenaway UK 1982 1hr 48mins
With: Anthony Higgins, Janet Suzman
When a 17th century artist is hired by the wife of a wealthy landowner to make some drawings of her lavish country estate little does the draughtsman realise that art, illusion, sex and death are closer than he could ever have imagined. Remastered by the British Film Institute in a sparkling digital print Peter Greenaway's enormously satisfying debut feature hasn't aged a jot, projecting its wit and intelligence with splendid panache. And Michael Nyman's wonderful score is an extra treat.
