Louise works at diner as a waitress and has boyfriend problems. Thelma is married to Darryl who likes his wife to stay quiet in the kitchen so that he can watch football on TV. One day both women decide to break out of their crap lives, jump in a car, and hit the road. But when Thelma is threatened with rape and Louise makes sure the guy will never do that, or anything else, ever again, their trip becomes a flight from the law as they head for the Mexican border, embracing freedom in the best way they can.
